Hello! My name is Emma Yazbek and I am a 4th year student at Dalhousie majoring in political science and psychology. When I'm not studying, I love to spend my free time outside, going for hikes and taking my dog, Maggie, to Point Pleasant Park. I have always been passionate about helping those in need and H4H is a great way to do so. Once I heard about the organization and read about the group’s goals I was so excited to get involved and help out right away! I’m looking forward to creating change and new opportunities in the lives of these children.

Dalhousie

Hello, I’m Ted! I’m an undergraduate student currently working on an honours thesis in Dalhousie’s Biology department. As a previous resident of London, Ontario, I became acquainted with Heart4Heart after hearing about the selfless efforts of the Western Chapter. Upon investigating H4H further and learning of the 44 life-changing surgeries it has funded, I knew the organisation would make for a valuable addition to the Dalhousie community. As a result, I decided to take on the responsibility of founding and being the President of the Dalhousie Chapter. In my free time I like playing chess, running and helping others- which I look forward to doing alongside my peers at Dalhousie, those around the country, and this extraordinary organisation.

Hey! I’m Makaila Koshurba, and I’m a fourth-year Neuroscience & Health Studies student at Dal. Outside of H4H, you can probably find me lifeguarding at the local pool, volunteering at the hospital, hiking, camping, or hanging out with friends. I first heard about H4H through one of my friends, and I couldn’t wait to get involved. Making a positive impact in the lives of others is something I aspire to do every day, and this provides me with an opportunity to extend my reach even further to children with CHD. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity and can’t wait to see what it brings!

In addition, I am a member of the National Youth Advisory Committee at CAMH — which raises much-needed awareness about mental health across Canada. Finally, in my free time, I volunteer extensively with local hospitals specializing in patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s and depression.

Dalhousie

Hello! My name is Alexandre Dionne, and I’m currently finishing up my undergraduate degree in Biology at Dalhousie University. Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, I chose to attend Dalhousie because I am passionate about Marine Biology, and Halifax offers no shortage of opportunities to admire a variety of breathtaking aquatic species. Having lost my grandfather to complications arising from Congenital Heart Disease in my youth, I’ve always been looking for ways that I can make a difference and help reduce the global prevalence of CHD. When I stumbled across the Heart4Heart charity thanks to a classmate of mine, I felt immediately compelled to join. I was fortunate enough to grow up in an area where early CHD treatment is available, but many other children in developing countries don’t have that luxury. I believe that every child deserves the chance to live a full and healthy life, and can’t wait to deepen my involvement with the organisation.

Hey! My name is Natasha, I am originally from Calgary, Alberta and moved to Ottawa back in 2019. I am currently in my third year of Psychology at the University of Ottawa. Although I miss the mountains, I found a home in the quiet little nooks around the byward market, where I like to read a book or write a poem. In addition to reading and writing, I practice yoga daily and enjoy making collages out of magazine scraps. During my time volunteering in various parts of the world, I watched many kids succumb to illness because they were unable to get proper treatment in time. It was a heartbreaking experience but only strengthened my resolve to help these children and educate myself on various diseases and illnesses. I am looking forward to using my skills to help Heart4Heart save the lives of more children.

Hi! My name is Adela Gottardi, and I am in my 4th year of Translational and Molecular Medicine. I was born and raised in Ottawa. When I am not studying, I enjoy dancing, traveling, hiking, and forcing my friends to go skating in cold weather. What drew me to Heart4Heart was the opportunity to directly help children with congenital heart disease. We are fortunate to have access to life-saving medical treatments in Canada and with the help of the uOttawa community, I know we could provide life-saving medical procedures to children where this kind of access is not possible. I hope you can join us at the next H4H event!

Hi, my name is Caleb, and I am currently in my third year of Translational and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Outside of school, I love to play hockey and lacrosse, as well as hiking through Northern Ontario with my friends in the summer. I also enjoy reading and watching (lots of) TV, both of which have definitely helped to pass time during the COVID-19 pandemic. I decided to join Heart 4 Heart after learning about the Gift of Life International program, and the work that they do to help children with congenital heart disease that would otherwise not get the help that they need. As a part of Heart 4 Heart, we are having a direct impact on so many different children and communities who are not as fortunate as us, and helping to give them a better quality of life that they deserve. I am super excited to work with such a great team and hope that we can raise even more money and awareness for H4H & Gift of Life in the upcoming years!
