Merline lives with her family in a small village in a remote area of Haiti. Merline has been living with a heart condition and the many illnesses associated with it since birth. With no pediatric care available in Haiti, the only option for treatment is to travel abroad; which her parents cannot afford, nor be lucky enough to be selected from treatment during one of the few medical missions each year. Merline is a sweet girl who likes to laugh and play. However, often when she plays with her siblings and friends, she must stop and take a break because she is tired and out of breath. Having her heart healed would allow her a happy and healthy future.

Veronica lives with her parents in a small town outside the capital city of Bucharest. She has been living with a heart condition for 14 years and has struggled with many illnesses as a result. With each passing year, Veronica has less energy and has more difficulty gaining weight. As a teenager, she cannot do the types of activites her friends participate in because she is always tired and not feeling well. Veronica needs a catheterization procedure to repair her heart defect. This relatively simple procedure requires a device which is very expensive and which her parents cannot afford. Veronica looks forward to a day when she does not feel tired and ill and can take on activities like a normal teenager.
